Geography

Geography Intent Statement

Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Through the Smawthorne Experience, we aim to nurture our future geographers and equip them with the knowledge they will need to become mindful citizens of the world.

Children investigate a range of places – both in Britain and the wider world – to help develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area of Castleford and Yorkshire so that they can develop of real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special. Through educational visits, we aim to bring learning to life and give children experiences to inspire their interest in Geography and lifelong learning.

We also develop the children’s ability to apply geographical skills to enable to enable children to confidently communicate their findings and geographical understanding to a range of audiences.

Technology plays a huge part in our children’s learning and is used to motivate and inspire children in their Geography lessons. Children are encouraged to take learning into their own hands using books, maps and the internet as well as their own experiences.

The children know teachers’ expectations for their Geography work is just as high as all other subjects, and they are challenged to always achieve the best of their ability. Higher level geographers are challenged to extend their knowledge of the world and work is differentiated appropriately for children with SEN to allow them to access their programme of study.

Through high-quality teaching, we aim to develop children’s geographical knowledge, an understanding of current issues around the environment and ignite a sense of curiosity about the world and the people who live there.

Inspirational Quote:

"Geography brings us all down to Earth. It gives other subjects a sense of place. We create our geography, and yet we are affected by geography
Geography… it's a world thing."
