Bug Club is a website that gives children extra opportunities to practise their reading and comprehension skills. There is a huge collection of both fiction and non-fiction books to choose from. Each book will help to develop children’s reading and phonics skills.
This website has a selection of phonics games to support children at different levels of phonic ability. The games can be found under the different phases of phonics. Playing these types of games, helps to develop children’s reading and writing skills.

Panda class is a very lucky class, as it has 2 teachers. Miss Hunt works all day Monday and Tuesday, while Mrs Prior works all day Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
My name is Mrs Prior and I am married with a daughter and a son. I have always wanted to be a teacher from an early age.When I was at primary school, I was inspired by one of my class teachers and from then on I have always wanted to work with children to help educate them and give them a foundation on which they can build their education on.
I also wanted to help to inspire, motivate and encourage the children with each activity that they do, no matter how big or how small it may be.I believe that every child is talented at something and with the correct level of teaching and nurturing they will go on and achieve their ambition. I started working as a teacher at school in 1997, when it was known as Smawthorne Infants School. I started working there as one of the Foundation class teachers.After working in Foundation I then moved to Year 1, where I taugh for 10 years.
When Smawthorne Infants amalgamated with Henry Moore Junior School, to become Smawthorne Henry Moore Primary School, I went back to being a Foundation teacher.After a couple of years in Foundation I moved to Year 3, where I taught for 2 years.I have also taught in Year 2, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6.In September 2016, I started teaching in Year 1 again, which I am really enjoying.So, I have worked at Smawthorne for a total of 22 years.As well as being a class teacher, I am also the Science co-ordinator, which means I am responsible for the Science curriculum in our school.
My name is Miss Hunt and I teach in Panda class on a Monday and a Tuesday.
I started working at school in 2011, so I have been at Smawthorne for eight years now.I have taught in Year 1 for six years and in the Early Years for two years.I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since I was a little girl.
I want to help younger children to achieve their full potential no matter what it may be. I love how all children learn differently and I want to be someone that inspires, motivates and encourages children to be the best that they can be, every day.I am a very lucky teacher who has more than one job role in school.I am a teacher two days a week and on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays I am the school’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, Inclusion Leader as well as the CIC designated leader.I love each role and the diversity they bring to me every day in work.
Our homework consists of :-
- Weekly Handwriting – to be handed out on a Friday, to be handed back in on the following Wednesday.
- Weekly Spellings – handed out on a Monday (glued into planners), to be tested on the following Monday.
- Weekly Maths Homework – to be handed out on a Friday, to be handed back in on the following Wednesday.
Our weekly handwriting is based upon a different letter of the alphabet and words that have that specific letter in it. We are focusing on teaching the children the correct letter formation, size and orientation as well as writing each letter on the line.
The children are tested every Monday on their spellings. We have split the children into 2 spelling groups and each group will be given a list of spellings to learn, based on their recent test scores. Your child should know which group they are in and will be able to tell you what their spellings are for the week. The children will be tested on the Year 1 Common Exception Words.

The maths homework is given out every Friday. Each week there will be a different focus. The homework is to help consolidate what has been taught in maths throughout that week.

Spring Term 1
During the first half of the Spring term we will be going on a visit to The Deep to support our learning. The Deep is one of the most amazing aquariums that can be found in the world. The Deep is in Hull, East Yorkshire. It is an award-winning attraction that is home to over 3,500 fish, some of which include sharks and sting rays. We are looking forward to seeing all the different sea creatures swimming around including sharks, turtles, penguins and jellyfish.
Summer Term 1
During the first half of the Summer term we are really excited to be going to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is a trip in which we get to see a variety of wild animals in different environments. We are also lucky enough to take part in a hands on class session where we get to learn about a variety of live mini beasts and unusual wild animals. We are really looking forward to seeing all the different wild animals in their own environment including the polar bears, lions, giraffes and tigers.
Autumn Term 1:
During week 1 of Autumn 1, we will be researching different careers with animals as part of our Careers Week. In week 2 and week 3 our work will be based on “The Large Family.” The work that we will be doing will be based on writing descriptions of our own family members and writing descriptions of the characters from the book. We then move on to read “The Tiger Who Came To Tea” in week 4 and 5. We will be retelling the story using Talk for Writing and we will be writing character descriptions. In week 6, 7 and 8 we look at the fiction book, “Elmer.” We will be retelling the story using Talk for Writing, creating a different ending to the story and writing character descriptions.
Autumn Term 2:
During Autumn 2, we will be looking at a variety of different genres, starting with “The Princess and The Dragon.” During week 1 – 3 the work that we will be doing based on “The Princess and The Dragon” will be creating character descriptions of the Princess and of the Dragon and writing a description of the setting of the story. Week 4 is our whole school assessment week. In week 5 and 6 we move on to look at non-fiction texts based on castles and the different types of castles. In week 7 we will be writing a letter to Santa.
Autumn Term 1:
Throughout the first half of the Autumn Term, we will be looking at:

Autumn Term 2:
Throughout the second half of the Autumn Term, we will be looking at:

- Count, read and write numbers to 20 in numerals and words
- Give a number, identify 1 more or 1 less.
- 2D shape recognition, including rectangles, squares, circles and triangles.
- 3D shape recognition, including cubes, cuboids, pyramids and spheres.
Autumn Term 1:
During this topic we will be distinguishing between an object and the material from which it is made. We will be identifying and naming a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, fabric, clay, paper.
We will be grouping different objects depending on what they are made from as well as investigating which materials are the strongest to make the 3 little pigs houses from.
We will be observing changes across the season and identifying the different types of weather that we have in Autumn by keeping a weather chart to show the changes in the weather.
We will also be investigating Autumn and how the length of day varies and which season Autumn comes before and after.
Autumn Term 2:
During this topic we will be identifying and naming the basic parts of our bodies. We will be drawing and labelling the different parts of the human body.
We will also be naming and labelling our 5 senses through kinaesthetic learning as well as taking part in different investigations with our 5 senses. Children will develop their understanding of how to keep healthy.
Spring Term 1:
During Spring 1, we will be looking at a variety of different genres, starting with “Rainbow Fish.” In week 1 we will be retelling the story using Talk For Writing. In week 2 we will be creating a set of instructions about how to look after fish. We then move on to read different sea creature poems and create our own, in week 3. In week 4, our English is based on writing a recount of what we did on our trip to The Deep. We will look at information writing and creating a fact file. In week 5 and week 6 we look at the fiction book “Tiddler.” We will be retelling the story using Talk For Writing then we will be using our creative writing skills to create an alternative ending to the story.
Spring Term 2:
During the second half of the Spring Term, we will be looking at a variety of different genres, starting with “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” in week 1. The work that we will be doing based on “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” will be instructional writing. We will be creating a list of instructions on how to make porridge for the bears.
We then move on to read “The Three Little Pigs” in week 2 and week 3. We will focus on the retelling of the story using Talk For Writing and then changing an element of the story. Week 4, is our assessment week. In week 5 and week 6, we look at the fiction book, “Handa’s Surprise,” where we will create a comparison of cultures and lots of creative writing activities based on setting descriptions.
Spring Term 1:
Throughout the first half of the Spring Term, we will be looking at:
- Addition and recapping skills and methods within 20
- Subtraction within 20 looking at methods, reasoning and explaining skills.
- Place value but with a focus to 10, moving on to looking at place value within 50, focusing on number values, ordering and recognising numbers, comparing and representing numbers.
- 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Spring Term 2:
Throughout the second half of the Spring Term, we will be focusing on : -
- Place value to 50 - distinguishing between and using ordinal and cardinal numbers, identifying a given a number and understanding it’s place value, identify one more and one less
- Multiplication (2’s, 5’s, 10’s) and division knowledge to be extended and recapped.
- We will be looking at measuring and comparing length
- We will be looking at measuring and comparing height
- We will be introducing weight and mass - looking at both measuring and comparing
- We will introduce capacity to the children and discuss, measure and compare capacity.
Spring Term 1:
During this topic we will be identifying and naming a variety of common animals including fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
We will also be describing and comparing a variety of common animals.
Children to group animals on their type and look at their variation. They will also be matching the animals to their habitats.
We will also name the different common body parts of animals.
The children will be able to understand and describe how animals have different features.
Spring Term 2
During this topic we will be identifying and naming a variety of common wild and garden plants and trees, including deciduous and evergreen trees.
We will also be identifying and describing the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.
We will be looking at the different parts of plants, flowers and trees and labelling them.
As part of this topic the children will understand the terms deciduous and evergreen when talking about trees. They will also group different plants, flowers and trees using different criteria.
We will be observing changes across the season and identifying the different types of weather that we have in Spring by keeping a weather chart to show the changes in the weather.
We will also be investigating Spring and how the length of day varies and which season Spring comes before and after.
We will continue discussing how the length of the day changes, as well as plant growth, new buds and new life.
Summer Term 1:
During the first half of the Summer Term, we will be looking at a variety of different genres. In week 1 we will be creating our own animal story. In week 2 we will be doing lots of work based around our visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. We will be writing a recount of the trip and thinking about what we learnt about the different animals. In week 3, 4 and 5 we will be focusing on the book “Where The Wild Things Are.” We will be creating character descriptions, setting descriptions, planning the beginning, middle and end to our own animal story then writing the story.
Summer Term 2:
During the second half of the Summer term, we will be looking at a variety of different genres. In week 1 and 2 the book we will be looking at is The Light House Keepers Lunch. We will be using Talk For Writing to support the children in creating a retell of the story and we will also be writing a postcard linked to the story. In week 3 it is our whole school assessment week. In week 4 and 5
we will be creating work based on the book The Snail and the Whale. We will be looking at different features of writing postcards and then we will be writing a postcard from the snail or the whale’s perspective.
In week 6 and 7 we will be looking at Lucy and Tom Go to The Seaside. We will be writing a postcard using the skills that we have learned in previous weeks. We will also be writing a setting description of the seaside.
Summer Term 1:
Throughout the first half of the Summer Term we will be focusing on: -
- developing our existing knowledge of reading, writing and correctly spellings numbers 0-20.
- multiplication and division facts in the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, counting in multiples of twos, fives and tens, solving one step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays, counting in 10s, making equal groups, adding equal groups, making arrays, making doubles, making equal groups - grouping
- number fractions, recognising, finding and naming a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity, recognising, finding and naming a quarter as one of four equal parts of an object, shape or quantity, comparing, describing and solving practical problems for: lengths and heights (for example, long/short, longer/shorter, tall/short, double/half),
- comparing, describing and solving practical problems for: mass/weight (for example, heavy/light, heavier than, lighter than); capacity and volume (for example, full/empty, more than, less than, half, half full, quarter)
Summer Term 2:
Throughout the second half of the Summer Term we will be focusing on: -
- Geometry - Position and Direction. We will be looking at describing position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three quarter turns.
- Number and Place Value with a focus on the numbers 0 to 100. Children need to know how to count, recognise and order numbers to 100.
- Money - recognising the value of different denominations of coins and notes, we will do this through looking at and handling money.
- Time - beginning to tell time (hour and half past) as well as knowing and recording hours, minutes and seconds. The children will also be learning and using time vocabulary (quick, slow, earlier and later)
- Times tables - children need to confidently know their two’s, five’s and ten time tables by the end of year one to support them further in the next few years.
Summer Term 1:
In Science we will be
- identifying and naming a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
- researching what we eat.

- naming parts of trees and plants that are eaten
- Grouping animals depending on their type and where they live, finding out about what a carnivore, omnivore and herbivore is and group them depending on what they eat.
Summer Term 2:
- During this topic we will be describing the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials, comparing and grouping together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties and their uses.
- We will be investigating different materials to find out which material is waterproof and investigating the different materials that would be suitable to make an umbrella for Teddy.
- We will also be learning about what makes materials transparent or opaque, as well as other properties such as whether they are magnetic or not.
- We will be investigating different materials to find out which material keeps the ice troll frozen for the longest.
- We will be observing changes across the season and identifying the different types of weather that we have in Summer by keeping a weather chart to show the changes in the temperatures and the weather.
We will also be investigating Summer and how the length of day
varies, including the “longest day” and what it means. We will
look at which season Summer comes before and after.
