Mathematics

The children will be taught a variety of strategies, both mental and written in accordance with the 2014 National Curriculum for Mathematics and the Early Years curriculum.

We aim to equip each child with the confidence to use the most efficient strategy and have the ability to use an alternative method to check their results for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Relevant vocabulary will be stressed in ALL Maths Lessons. A full and detailed list of all the vocabulary to be covered per year group can be found in the publication ‘Mathematical Vocabulary for the 2014 National Curriculum’.

The children should be taught that the ‘equal sign’ (=) means ‘is exactly the same as’ or ‘is the same number as’. We will not say makes unless for example when putting 5 counters with 5 more counters and saying ‘this would make 10 counters’.

Number sentences are an expression of the relationship between numbers rather than an action e.g. 6 + 2 = 8 means 6 plus 2 is the same as 8.

Children will be taught to recognise that the equal sign does not always have to come after the calculation, for example 9 + 3 = 12 can be written 12 = 9 + 3.

Children will be presented with real-life situations e.g. measures, money, time questions as appropriate.

The children in key stage 2 will be encouraged to underline the answer to calculations. This is particularly important in multi-step problems.

For all partitioning methods, we will start with the most significant digit of the largest number.

(All examples given are based on simple calculations but the strategies apply to more complex calculations).

“The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated but to make complicated things simple.”
