Trainee Teachers
At Smawthorne Henry Moore, we offer places to School Direct trainees through the Outwood Institute of Education and Sheffield Hallam University. The trainees are welcomed at two points of the year, September and January and are assigned to class teachers who can support their development towards becoming an effective practitioner. Prior to placement, all School Direct trainees are DBS checked. Whilst with us, the trainees have a thorough induction programme and are welcomed as part of the team.
Initially, trainees observe and undertake small group work, picking up more responsibility each week. They are encouraged into whole class teaching through a ‘team teach’ approach where lessons being taught are shared with the class teacher. This ensures a consistent and fluid approach to the teaching of the children. During each placement, the trainees complete a ‘teaching block’ where they are assessed and observed teaching lessons against national teacher standards.
Through our partnership with School Direct, we are able to share excellent teaching approaches and strategies, provide trainees with a range of experiences and reflect upon our own practice. The trainees also enrich our curriculum by sharing resources and approaches they are taught in university, developing our professional development as a school.
